The initial area that comprised the Calvert-St. Mary's Metropolitan Planning Organization became a Urbanized Area (UZA) after the 2010 Census when the population in the Lexington Park - California - Chesapeake Ranch Estates region surpassed 50,000 (58,000). This triggered the Federal requirement that these areas form a Metropolitan Planning Organization to coordinate transportation planning between, through and around this Urbanized Area, as it pertains to projects that receive federal funding.
